There are two NPCs that can upgrade your weapons: the Blacksmith Hewg in the Roundtable Hold hub area and the Smithing Master Iji in the Road to the Manor hub area. Both of these NPCs accept your Smithing Stones or Runes to upgrade your weapon. Prioritize upgrading your best-in slot items first. Then upgrade those that you won't replace soon. If you're planning to play an asymmetrical build, for example, upgrade your weapon, then your shoulders and chest before your hands and feet. The same principles apply to Magic and Utility Items, with the caveat that some products may be superior to others depending on your playstyle. The same goes for Armour and reforges, with some being better than others. Magic Items A character can only upgrade one magic item at a time. These can be particularly useful for characters who have had to leave their homes, or are in a situation where they might not be welcome. An item that is magical can provide them with an invisibility effect, or make them invisible to everyone other than a selected person. Utility Items Utility items are those that don't fall into the categories of Clothing, Armor or Weapons, and provide a range of different capabilities. Utility items are not compatible with each other, unlike weapons or armor. Most utility items have a passive effect that the player can activate when using them, but some also have additional capabilities that are activated when the user presses a button or activates an ability. The Flashlight is the most popular utilitarian item. It lights up the area around it. Other items of utility include the Helicopter Hat and Rocket Boots, which allow the player to be floating in the air while moving and the Jetpack that allows players to accelerate in any direction while on the ground. In the Engineering section, you can instantly produce several utility items, while others are only available through Research projects or Experimental projects on the Proving Ground. Players can unlock more powerful utility items in addition to the items they have in their usual inventory by purchasing them at the Atomic Shop or from seasonal Scoreboard rewards. Some of these items can be upgraded to allow more efficient use. The majority of utilitarian items provide the player with an advantage in navigation or boost a specific combat ability. Sharpening stones, created by a Weaponsmith, increase Power and Ferocity. Maintenance Oils, created by an Huntsman can increase concentration and healing power. Other items that are useful can be used by players to increase Damage or Condition Damage. All XCOM soldiers can equip a useful item at the beginning of the campaign. Eventually, an additional slot can be obtained by acquiring certain types of armor or by completing engineering, research or experimental projects in the Proving Ground. In the Alien Hunters DLC, additional slots are created by equipping the Grenade Launcher, which allows the player to equip a Smoke Grenade or Bomb in another grenade slot. an offensive grenade is equipped in the main grenade slot.
